Overview
Dating precisely to 1791, this late 18th-century German pewter plate (Teller) reflects the disciplined metalworking traditions of Enlightenment-era Central Europe. Attributed to the artisan Remig, the piece is defined by a broad, smooth rim and shallow central well, showcasing the silvery-grey lustre characteristic of high-tin alloys. The underside features a triad of deeply stamped guild touchmarks, including the iconic Archangel Michael purity mark. An ideal accent piece for display on a plate rail, styled as a rustic wall charger, or placed on a console table within Wabi-Sabi, Country French, or Global Eclectic interiors.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
In late 18th-century Central Europe, pewter guilds enforced strict composition standards to guarantee non-toxic, durable tableware. To signify compliance, master pewterers stamped their wares with an official Engelszinn (Angel Pewter) mark—depicting Archangel Michael holding the scales of justice—which served as a seal of high tin purity. This 1791 plate bears three distinct shield cartouches on its base: the dated angel purity mark alongside town and maker marks associated with master founder Remig. The reverse also displays a fine hand-punched maker/owner monogram near the rim, documenting its authentic personal lineage within late 18th-century domestic life.
Condition & Surface Character
The plate preserves an authentic, untouched antique surface with a soft grey patina developed over two centuries. Historical character traits include light surface scratches, subtle utensil marks in the well, minor oxidation specks, and slight rim asymmetry natural to gravity-cast 18th-century metals. The three reverse touchmarks and hand-punched monogram remain exceptionally crisp and legible.
