Overview
A vintage sterling silver pedestal compote by Alvin, model S206. The wide rim has two decorative bands: an inner band of pierced openwork in a fine trellis pattern, and an outer border of raised flowers and scrolling leaves. The rim frames a smooth, round bowl with a small raised ring at the center, set on a slender trumpet stem and a round domed foot. The silver has a bright shine on the bowl and border, with darker tone in the pierced work and some tarnish on the stem and foot. At about 6 inches tall, it makes a good centerpiece for candy, nuts or small fruit on a dining table, sideboard or buffet.
Background
Pierced and weighted sterling compotes were popular American tableware in the mid-20th century. Alvin was an American silver maker that later became part of Gorham. The underside is marked "ALVIN", "STERLING", "CEMENT FILLED REINFORCED WITH ROD OF OTHER METAL" and the model number "S206". As the mark says, the foot is weighted with cement and the stem is reinforced with a metal rod, which keeps it steady.
Condition
Good vintage condition. There are light scratches and some small tarnish spots in the bowl, darker tarnish in the pierced band, and tarnish and wear on the stem and foot. No breaks, dents or repairs seen. Please see all photos.
