Overview
A set of six vintage metal plate holders, each with a sliding metal dark slide and a gray pull tab. Each holder has a black painted metal body with a stepped top edge. The holders are numbered 1 through 6 in raised circles, so the set stays in order when shooting. The dark slides have a row of small raised dots near the end, and one holder has a cream card insert inside. They suit a plate camera user whose camera back takes holders of this exact size, or a collector of vintage photography gear.
Size and fit (please read)
Each holder measures about 5.75 x 3.7 inches (about 14.6 x 9.4 cm) and about 0.2 inch thick, measured by hand. These holders are probably made for 9x12 cm plates or cut film, but they are narrower than many common 9x12 holders, which are often about 9.7 to 10 cm wide and 14 to 15 cm long. Plate holders were not standardized between camera makers, so please measure the holder slot on your camera back and compare it to the size above before buying. The set has no visible maker name and has not been tested on a camera.
Background
Single metal plate holders like these were used with folding plate cameras in the early and mid 20th century. Each one held a single glass plate, or a sheet of film in a film sheath, behind a removable dark slide.
Condition
Used vintage condition. The black finish has scratches, scuffs and handling marks. One holder has orange rust spots along the top edge near the pull tab. The bodies look straight, with no bends. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
Each holder: about 5.75 x 3.7 x 0.2 inches (14.6 x 9.4 x 0.5 cm). The set of six weighs about 1 lb 9 oz.
