Skilled coppersmiths craft these pieces by hand-punching, incising, and chasing tinned brass or copper plates, creating rich narrative scenes surrounded by intricate borderwork.
This curated 2-piece wall plate set highlights two foundational themes in Middle Eastern decorative art:
Equestrian Hunting & Calligraphy Plate (8.2"): Features a central relief scene depicting a classical royal hunting (Shikar) pursuit, complete with mounted figures on horseback navigating mountain terrain. Surrounding the scene is a wide rim border divided into flowing calligraphic cartouches with stylized Arabic script, traditionally used in Islamic metalwork to convey poetic blessings, wisdom, and goodwill.
Court Musician & Garden Plate (7.5"): Depicts two courtly figures seated beneath a tree of life in a paradise garden setting. One figure plays a traditional arched harp (chang or lute), reflecting centuries-old Middle Eastern court traditions of poetry, musical performance, and royal leisure.
Both plates are hand-hammered from copper/brass with a traditional tinned silver-gray finish, exhibiting an authentic aged patina that highlights the depth of the hand-carved relief work.
Item Specifications
Culture / Origin: Middle Eastern Decorative Metalwork
Object Type: Hand-Engraved Wall Plates / Display Chargers (Set of 2)
Motifs: Equestrian Hunting Scene with Calligraphy & Court Musicians
Primary Material: Tinned Metal (Copper / Brass)
Technique: Hand-Chased & Engraved Relief (Ghalamzani style)
Estimated Era: Mid-to-Late 20th Century
Dimensions:
Larger Plate: 8.2 Inches Diameter
Smaller Plate: 7.5 Inches Diameter

https://belleafrikarts.com/products/vintage-middle-eastern-engraved-metal-wall-plates-set-calligraphy-8-2
