Clad in a dense, shingled mantle of layered hand-hammered iron blades driven over coarse woven burlap textile, the figure features an intact mirror-sealed abdominal charge (bilongo), kaolin-pigmented eye cavities, and a sculpted avian guardian perched along the ear and shoulder. Its raw textural intensity and dramatic sculptural volume create a powerful focal point for Brutalist, Industrial, Wabi-Sabi, and Curated Ethnographic art interiors.
Cultural & Artistic Background
In Kongo and Yombe spiritual systems, Nkisi Nkondi figures (plural: Minkisi) represent active vessels of judicial power and ancestral protection. Carved by a master sculptor and consecrated by a nganga (spiritual expert), the figure was activated during oaths, covenant agreements, and village dispute resolutions. Each iron blade (mfele) inserted into the body represents a distinct contract, prayer, or legal decree driven into the spirit's domain to awaken its vigilance.
The central glass mirror covering the abdominal cavity serves a dual purpose: reflecting malicious energy back toward its source while enabling the spirit to peer into the hidden unseen world. Kaolin white clay (mpemba) accentuating the eyes symbolizes spiritual sight and ancestral illumination. The integrated carved bird along the upper shoulder acts as a spiritual messenger, capable of traversing between the earthly realm (seke) and the ancestral spirit world (nsi a fwa).
Condition & Surface Character
The sculpture exhibits robust structural integrity and stands firmly balanced on its blocky carved base. The wooden surface possesses a deep, dark aged patina with preserved kaolin clay around the eye orbits and mouth. The abdominal mirror housing remains securely embedded within its resin casing with age-consistent surface clouding. The heavy canvas wrapping holds a dense, complete array of overlapping iron blades displaying authentic oxidized rust, dark patina, and natural surface wear accumulated over decades of handling and preservation.
Dimensions & Weight
Height: 23.0 inches
Width: 11.0 inches
Depth: 9.0 inches
Weight Profile: Solid / Heavy Weight

https://belleafrikarts.com/products/vintage-kongo-nkisi-nkondi-power-figure-carved-wood-iron-blade-statue-23
