Perfect for elevated shelf styling, a refined mantel display, a credenza centerpiece, or a serene addition to Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, and Mid-Century Modern interiors, this set serves as both an evocative historical specimen and a striking decorative accent. Complimentary, fully insured standard shipping is included with your purchase.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
Rooted in centuries-old East Asian hospitality and celebratory rites, sakazuki are wide, shallow wooden vessels traditionally used for ceremonial sake consumption during weddings, formal banquets, and milestone commemorations. This specific trio carries rich historical provenance, as evidenced by the gilded kanji inscriptions on the lacquered undersides identifying them as commemorative gifts from Teikoku Seimei Hoken Kabushiki Kaisha (Imperial Life Insurance Co., Ltd., founded in 1888 during the Meiji period).
The interior wells are individually decorated with iconic symbolic motifs:
The Minogame (Divine Long-Tailed Turtle): Rendered in intricate gold gilt atop a rocky shoreline, the legendary minogame turtle—distinguished by its trailing coat of algae—is the ultimate East Asian emblem of longevity, wisdom, and 1,000 years of unbroken good fortune.
Institutional Heraldry: The central star-shaped emblem encases the character Ikiru ("Life"), representing institutional protection and vitality.
Foliate Leaf & Mitsudomoe Crests: A gold and silver leaf motif graces the third bowl, while silver-lacquered mitsudomoe (triple spiral crests) adorn the outer underside, offering traditional protective symbolism.
Condition & Surface Character
The set remains in excellent vintage condition, exhibiting fine structural integrity across all three wooden pieces. The vermilion lacquer retains its brilliant gloss and deep crimson tone, showing only minimal, age-appropriate micro-surface scratches, subtle rim wear, and light natural wear along the unlacquered wooden foot rings—hallmarks of authentic vintage utility and decades of careful preservation. The gilded and silvered iconography remains crisp and vibrant.
Dimensions, Shipping & Display
Height: 1.3 inches
Width/Diameter: 4.3 inches
Depth: 4.3 inches
Weight Profile: Lightweight, organic wooden hand-feel
Shipping: Free Standard Shipping (Fully Insured & Securely Boxed)

https://belleafrikarts.com/products/vintage-japanese-red-lacquer-sakazuki-sake-bowls-minogame-set-of-3-wood-4-3
