Cast with expressive, high-relief detail, the piece features an open jaw, pierced ventilation nostrils, and scrolling mane curls accented by remnants of cold gilding. Whether styled as a paperweight on an executive desk, an antiquarian shelf accent, or a centerpiece within a Wabi-Sabi or Japandi interior scheme, this heavy iron relic brings ancestral drama and protective symbolism to any collection. Every purchase includes complimentary, fully insured standard domestic shipping.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
Rooted in East Asian Buddhist metalworking traditions, Guardian Lions (Shishi or Komainu) are sacred symbolic protectors traditionally placed at temple gates and ancestral altars to ward off negative energies and preserve spiritual harmony. In traditional incense culture, hollow censer lids were sculpted as ferocious lion heads so that burning aromatic resins inside would release plumes of fragrant smoke drifting through the open jaws and hollow nostrils. The fabrication reflects traditional sand-cast iron founding, followed by hand-chasing of the mane scrolls (karakusa) and the application of gold lacquer or paint within the recessed lines to highlight the beast's divine energy.
Condition & Surface Character
The piece exhibits an authentic, weathered antiquarian character with a rich dark iron oxidation patina and noticeable soil/verdigris settling in the carved grooves. Residual traces of old gold paint linger within the spiraled mane curls. As noted, the sculpture shows an age-appropriate historical loss with the right ear fractured off at the base socket, exposing the underlying dark cast metal structure. This structural wear and missing component are consistent with its age and former utility as a functional censer lid, reinforcing its genuine relic aesthetic.
Dimensions, Shipping & Display
Length: 3.0 inches
Width: 3.0 inches
Height: 2.0 inches
Weight Profile: Heavy / Dense cast iron weight relative to compact scale
Shipping: Free Standard Shipping (Fully Insured & Securely Boxed)
Mounting/Display: Object Only (Display stand not included)

https://belleafrikarts.com/products/vintage-cast-iron-foo-dog-shishi-head-censer-lid-gilded-asian-guardian-lion-3
