Standing at 10 inches tall, these carvings boast a deeply weathered, organic texture and a minimalist, highly abstract form. One figure features a subtly tilted head gazing upward, a classic hallmark of Nigerian plateau shrine art.
Carved from solid hardwood with a beautiful, rugged patina, this matching duo brings a striking, brutalist element to a mid-century modern shelf, gallery art display, or rustic global interior.
Cultural & Historical Significance
These sculptures are authentic examples of the sacred woodcarving traditions of the Chamba people, who inhabit the Benue River valley region spanning southeastern Nigeria and western Cameroon.
The Tau Tradition: In Chamba culture, small columnar figures like these are known as Tau protective or ancestral statues. Rather than mere aesthetic ornaments, they are historically carved to serve as powerful guardians for the household and lineage, often anchored into the ground of family compounds or fields to protect against negative spirits and ensure a prosperous harvest.
The Skyward Gaze: The figure on the left is depicted with its head tilted slightly backward, looking up toward the heavens. In the art of the Nigerian plateau, this expressive posture is an intentional symbolic gesture representing a direct line of communication with ancestral spirits or a plea for guidance.
Primitive Geometric Forms: The stylized, helmet-like coiffures, simplified facial profiles, and integrated limbs showcase the powerful, column-like minimalism that heavily captivated early 20th-century European avant-garde artists and cubist sculptors.
Product Specifications
Quantity: Set of 2 unique, matching figures
Height: ~10.0 inches each
Width: ~2.5 inches
Depth: ~2.0 inches
Material: Solid Indigenous Hardwood
Aesthetic: Nigerian Folk Art, Chamba Tribal, Brutalist Modern, Wabi-Sabi Decor
Condition Note
Both original vintage carvings are in beautiful, stable condition and stand securely on their chunky, integrated bases.
