Each figure stands upright with its palms pressed together at the chest in the wai gesture of respect. They wear tall tiered crowns that rise to a slender pointed finial, with carved ear ornaments, broad shoulder collars with incised flower patterns, and layered skirts with diamond and flower designs. The faces are calm, with lowered eyes and a slight smile. The gold-tone finish has red undertones in the recesses, which gives the carving depth, and the backs are fully carved as well. They suit a shelf, mantel or console, and they work well placed on either side of a doorway or altar.

Background

Thepphanom figures, shown with joined hands and tall pointed crowns, are a familiar subject in Thai temple art and in Thai woodcarving made for the home.
