Executed in classical fine-line gongbi brushwork on a silk ground (juanben 絹本), the portrait presents the Empress seated in a formal symmetrical posture, wearing a ceremonial red court robe over a wave-bordered underskirt and an elaborate jeweler’s crown (Dianzi). Measuring 74.5 inches in total hanging length with a 38-inch central painting area, this majestic artwork makes an extraordinary centerpiece for Asian art collections, entryway foyers, living room feature walls, or Global Eclectic and Wabi-Sabi interior design concepts. Every purchase includes complimentary, fully insured standard shipping securely packed in its fitted presentation box.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
Imperial portraiture during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) served a vital dual function: honoring divine ancestral lineage through ritual filial piety (Xiao 孝) and documenting the exact rank, status, and sumptuary privileges of the royal household. The title label on the scroll margin and presentation box reads Juanben Xiao Huanghou Xiang (絹本孝皇后像), designating this painting as a formal ancestral portrait of the Empress.
The figure is adorned in full imperial court dress (Chaofu), featuring an outer vermilion silk robe rendered with delicate tonal brocade patterns and hands clasped within long sleeves in a posture of meditative dignity. Over her chest rests a square 1st Rank Badge (Buzi 補子) featuring a pristine white crane soaring above cresting sea waves (Jiangya Haishui) and auspicious clouds (Xiangyun). Her high collar (Lingyue) and throat are bordered in rich black embroidered cloud scrolls. Most striking is her imperial court headdress (Dianzi / Fengguan), meticulously detailed with blue kingfisher feather filigree motifs, golden floral ornaments, faux-pearl inlay, and cascading side tassels (Liusu) framing her face. She rests upon a carved throne chair draped in patterned celadon silk, placed above a traditional carpet adorned with soft pink lotus blooms.
Condition & Surface Character
The painting is in excellent vintage condition, featuring rich, bright mineral pigments and refined line work. The silk painting ground exhibits a warm, even antiqued beige patina without tears, creases, or pigment flaking. The traditional scroll mounting consists of soft cream-yellow silk borders, dark turned-wood roller ends (Jizhou), and a reinforced hanging string. The scroll rolls smoothly for storage and comes complete with its original yellow geometric patterned silk brocade presentation box bearing an inlaid brushed calligraphy title label. The box exhibits light, age-appropriate storage wear along its exterior corners.
Dimensions, Shipping & Display
Overall Scroll Height: 74.5 inches
Overall Scroll Width: 31.0 inches
Painting Image Height: 38.0 inches
Painting Image Width: 25.0 inches
Depth / Roller Diameter: 1.0 inch
Weight Profile: Moderate (approx. 2.5 lbs scroll & box combined)
Shipping: Free Standard Shipping (Fully Insured & Securely Boxed)
Mounting/Display: Display stool, background props, and surrounding ceramics are not included.
